  • FMG completed a new Playing Pitch Strategy (‘PPS’) for North Northamptonshire Council in December 2024. The Council is a recently formed unitary authority that consisted of the four sovereign local authority areas of Corby, Kettering, East Northants, and Wellingborough. The strategy was developed in line with Sport England’s PPS guidance and was signed off by the steering group, which consisted of the Council, Sport England, NGBs, and Northamptonshire Sport. The assessment included consulting with over 70 local sports clubs, 25 education providers, and 31 Town/ Parish Councils, along with the relevant NGBs, Sport England and Council staff, to develop an understanding of the supply and demand of provision within the study area. Over 150 sites were assessed to understand the quality of the provision provided, which was captured in the assessment report. This presented the findings on a sports by sports basis and identified shortfalls on grass pitches for all sports and shortfalls of 8.25 3G AGPs.

  • North Northamptonshire has some of the largest housing growth numbers in the country, which was considered when developing the strategy and action plan. Sport England’s Playing Pitch Calculator was used to look at the demand generated from twelve strategic development locations to identify what they could contribute towards onsite and offsite sports provision.

  • The site-by-site action plan identified the current status of sites included in the study and what their future recommendations were (Protect, Enhance, or Provide), to ensure that the shortfalls identified could be met. The Council were also provided with training to update the PPS database as part of the Stage E process.

  • The strategy was adopted in March 2025 and has already support development of a full size 3G that’s was identified in the Action Plan.
